The area in and around Pennan has been populated for around 6000 years although in it's current form it mostly dates from the late 19th Century. The houses are built side on to the sea to provide some shelter from rough winter storms.
During the 19th century the village prospered with a variety of industries, notably being fishing, quarrying and smuggling. Have a look for the very small window at the top of the gable in number 28. This was supposedly used as a signal window to let boats know when the village was clear of excise men and it was safe to land their haul.
For shopping there are small stores and a Post Office in New Pitsligo just a few minutes drive away.
Nearby Fraserburgh (about 20 minutes drive) offers a selection of larger stores and supermarkets, Somerfield, Morrisons and Tesco. Incidentally Tesco.com will deliver supplies if ordered online.
In the opposite direction from Fraserburgh lie Banff and MacDuff which also host numerous specialist retailers including some of the best seafood on offer.
Many local villages have wonderful eateries, details of these are in the cottage but booking is very strongly advised at all times, some have very limited space.
Of course, if you prefer self catering why not take the picnic table and chairs and eat out on the sea front ?
If required local taxi firms are listed in the cottage.
